The answer from Hunslet’s own Minnie Dean when asked what the secret was to the secret of her longevity. She had just celebrated her 100th birthday when this photo was taken at Hunslet Library in December 2003. Mrs Dean grew up in Stourton, attending Stourton Council School before going to work at Mann's factory. The company made lithographic machinery but turned to the production of shells during the two World Wars. At this time, Minnie worked 12 hour shifts, walking from Stourton to Atkinson Street in Hunslet and back again each day. The photo is one of 21 plucked from the Yorkshire Evening Post archive charting the first five years of the 2000s in the life of Hunslet and its residents.
