Straight on view of the oldest section of the 1790 Crank Mill building on Station Road, which shows how the stonework has been subject to subsidence. Window frame lintels are at various angles, and the roof lines between the 3 bay part and the 7 bay part (not all shown) are at different heights. This might indicate two different periods of building even for this oldest part. The picture was taken in April 1972 when the mill was still working. | David Atkinson Archive Photo: David Atkinson Archive

Town Hall staff collating the votes in the different wards at the final count for election to the Council of the Borough of Morley in May 1972. The different tables, like Ardsley West in the background, have sent in their results and the staff are getting ready to hand the individual results to the returning officers for each ward. | David Atkinson Archive Photo: David Atkinson Archive

The M621 under construction in April 1972. The route of the motorway is making towards Leeds with the view in the background showing the extent of the city at this time. The two tall blocks of flats in the top right hand corner are the Cottingley Towers, at 22 storeys they were at this time the largest tower blocks in the city. The bridge being built over the motorway is Rooms Lane Bridge, which was needed to provide access to the turkey farm which can be seen on top of the embankment just to the left of the motorway. | David Atkinson Archive Photo: David Atkinson Archive

A view of a four car diesel unit on its way to Leeds is halted at Morley Low Station, having just emerged from Morley Tunnel. Although the ticket office above the train is still in existence it is no longer in use at this time. The windows are boarded up. It still had to be passed through to reach the Leeds platform, or to get to the bridge to cross the line for trains entering the tunnel. The three bay and seven bay buildings of the original 1790 Crank Mills was taken in 1972 whilst the mills were still working. The rooms are extremely low and small and the first factory machines were scaled to the size of domestic industry equipment, like handlooms, rather than the larger mid 19th century monsters.
