Buoyant photos take you back to Beeston in 1963

This wonderful collection of photos kicks off with a pub which will be remembered by a generation of football fans and locals in a south Leeds community.

New Peacock Inn was adjacent to Elland Road in Beeston and welcomed generations of revellers before it was closed in 1974 and was demolished to provide part of the route for junction 2 of the M621, roundabout and Stadium Way. The landlord and landlady at the time of closure were Sammy and Betty Redmond. They were expecting to become tenants of the New Inn at Churwell, but the brewery gave it instead to Leeds United legend John Charles. The disappointed couple became managers of the Old Peacock which was 300 yards away on the opposite side of the road. This photo from 1963 is one of 11 charting the year in the life of Beeston and its residents. The images are published courtesy of West Yorkshire Archive Service, which collects and looks after the unique documentary heritage of the region dating from the 12th century to the present day - more than 800 years of local history. It also runs Catablogue, an online blog dedicated to preserving the past, serving the present and protecting the future.
