This understated photo is a permanent reminder of the ultimate sacrifice of those from Horsforth who gave their tomorrow for our today. This is Stanhope Drive showing part of the avenue of trees planted as a memorial to the 211 men and one woman from the town who gave their lives in the First World War. Originally there was a name plaque on each tree but these have since been lost. However, the trees remain, along with a memorial stone at the centre of the avenue. The photo is one of 14 showcasing life around the town during the early 2000s with a range of local landmarks in focus as well as shops and pubs. The images are published courtesy of photographic archive Leodis, which is run by Leeds Library & Information Service. They also run heritage blog The Secret Library Leeds, which provides a behind the scenes look at the Central Library and highlights from its special collections, including rare books hidden away in the stacks.
