Everything we know as M62 crash near Leeds leaves two seriously injured and major traffic delays

A serious crash has closed the M62 eastbound near Leeds.

There are long delays in both directions of the M62 and the road closure has caused residual delays on bus services across West Yorkshire.

Police were called to the crash between a car and a lorry on the M62 eastbound carriageway at 8.37am.

It happened between junctions 26 and 27, near the Leeds Ikea at Birstall.

Fire crews, ambulance and an air ambulance were also called to the scene.

What vehicles were involved?

An Audi Q3 and a DAF HGV were involved in the crash.

Has anyone been injured?

The occupants of the Audi, a 74-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman, have both been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The HGV driver was not hurt.

Why is the road still closed?

The car came to rest facing the wrong way on the eastbound carriageway in the hard shoulder and there is also a diesel spillage in lane one.

The westbound carriageway was closed while the air ambulance attended the crash, but it has since reopened.

The eastbound carriageway remains closed and traffic trapped behind the scene is being turned back.

There are long delays in both directions and West Yorkshire Police have asked drivers to avoid the area if possible.

What diversions are in place?

A statement on the Highways England’s website says: "The M62 eastbound is closed between J26 (Cleckheaton) and J27 (South of Leeds centre) due to a collision. Emergency Services, including West Yorkshire Police are in attendance.

"Traffic is diverted, to follow the hollow circle diversion symbol. Exit at J26 and travel east on the A58 towards Holbeck / Leeds. Turn right onto the A650 Wakefield Road to re-join the M62 at J27.

“Delays are building on the approach to this closure, with approximately 4 miles of slow moving traffic on the approach to J26."

What have police said about the incident?

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: "At 8.37am today, police were called to a road traffic collision on the M62 eastbound between junctions 26 and 27.

"The incident involved an Audi Q3 and a DAF HGV. The occupants of the Audi, a 74-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman, have both been taken to hospital with serious injuries. The HGV driver was unhurt.

"A closure and diversion is in place on the eastbound carriageway between junctions 26 and 27 while the scene is dealt with and drivers are advised to avoid the area."
