The M62 has been closed heading eastbound due to a crash.

The eastbound carriageway has been closed and officers from Highways England and West Yorkshire Police are on the scene. An ambulance has also been sent to the scene. Follow our live blog for latest updates.

The road has been closed for around an hour

Closed ‘for some time'

Highways England have said the road is likely to be closed ‘for some time’ due to the severity of the incident.

Four miles of queueing traffic

There are currently four miles of queueing traffic and delays of around 30 minutes.

A statement on the Highways England’s website says: "The M62 eastbound is closed between J26 (Cleckheaton) and J27 (South of Leeds centre) due to a collision. Emergency Services, including West Yorkshire Police are in attendance.

"Traffic is diverted, to follow the hollow circle diversion symbol. Exit at J26 and travel east on the A58 towards Holbeck / Leeds. Turn right onto the A650 Wakefield Road to re-join the M62 at J27. 

“Delays are building on the approach to this closure, with approximately 4 miles of slow moving traffic on the approach to J26. ”

More information has just been provided to us from Highways England.

A spokesman said: "The incident happened at 8.40am and was a collision between a car and a lorry. The car came to rest facing the wrong way on the eastbound carriageway in the hard shoulder, and there is also a diesel spillage in lane one.

"An air ambulance was called and the westbound carriageway was blocked but this has now been released.

“The road is expected to be closed until at least lunchtime.”

Two people taken to hospital

We received a call at 8:39 this morning to reports of a two vehicle collision on theM62 and junction 26. Two ambulances, a rapid response vehicle, our hazardous area response team and air ambulance were dispatched to the scene. Two patients have been conveyed by ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary.

At 8.37am today, police were called to a road traffic collision on the M62 eastbound between junctions 26 and 27. The incident involved an Audi Q3 and a DAF HGV. The occupants of the Audi, a 74-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman, have both been taken to hospital with serious injuries. The HGV driver was unhurt. A closure and diversion is in place on the eastbound carriageway between junctions 26 and 27 while the scene is dealt with and drivers are advised to avoid the area.
