M62 Leeds: Live updates as serious crash shuts motorway for 15 hours and man confirmed dead

A Leeds motorway was closed for almost 15 hours following a fatal crash.

The M62 in West Yorkshire was closed eastbound between J28 (Leeds) and J29 (Wakefield) due to the serious collision.

Emergency services including West Yorkshire Police were on the scene, with National Highways Traffic Officers also in attendance to assist with traffic management.

West Yorkshire Police have confirmed an Audi A3 was travelling in the wrong direction when it was hit by a HGV. The male occupant of the Audi was confirmed dead at the scene.

30 minute delays reported

There are 30 min delays above normal travel time on approach to the M62 eastbound closure between J28 (Leeds) and J29 (M1).

There are approx. 3 miles of congestion so please allow extra journey time.

Road remains closed

The road remains closed as a full crash investigation takes place. National Highways hopes to reopen the route later this afternoon.

Road to reopen soon

A National Highways spokesperson said: "The M62 eastbound closure between J28 (Leeds) and J29 (M1) is in its finals stages following an earlier serious collision. We hope to have the road reopened shortly.

"There are currently 5 miles of congestion on approach to the closure so please allow extra travel time."

Final works underway

The M62 remains closed eastbound between J28 (Leeds) and J29 (M1) as final stages of the police investigation take place. The route is expected to reopen this afternoon.

Road closure reduced

The closure on the M62 Eastbound has now been reduced to an 'up and over' closure at junction 29.

Traffic is being diverted via the exit and entry slip roads. The carriageway is expected to reopen fully this afternoon.

The M62 eastbound has been closed since 3.30am this morning (Saturday March 9) following a fatal crash.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the accident which happened close to Junction 29 for Lofthouse. An Audi A3 was travelling in the wrong direction when it crashed with a Renault HGV.

The male occupant of the Audi died at the scene a short time later.

The eastbound carriageway has been closed throughout the day as West Yorkshire Police establish exactly what happened - and police want to speak to any witnesses.

The eastbound carriageway remains closed at junction 29, but delays are easing since the road reopened at junction 28.

The AA reports: "Delays of seven minutes and delays easing on M62 Eastbound in West Yorkshire. Average speed ten mph."

Closure still in place at junction 29 for resurfacing

The AA reports: "J29 is still closed for resurfacing with traffic being diverted via the entry and exit slip."

Road closure lifted

The closure has now been fully lifted almost 15 hours after the fatal crash on the M62 eastbound.
