What road closures will be in place?

The final surfacing phase is scheduled to take place between 7pm and 6am, over four full night-time closures, from tonight (Tuesday, September 1) until Saturday, September 5.

From 7pm Saturday, a 36-hour closure will include all day Sunday daytime for final surfacing, road markings and traffic signals. The roundabout will reopen 6am Monday 7 September.

How will the work affect me?

If you are close to the roundabout, and are within the hard closure points, marshals will be in place to assist with access during the works. Details have been confirmed with residents and businesses, located directly by the roundabout.

Leeds City Council have pre-arranged access times with these groups. Unforeseen access needs will be accommodated as swiftly as possible, and emergency access will be maintained.

When will revamp works be completed?

These final works will mean Lawnswood roundabout will be substantially complete in time to reopen from 6am on Monday, September 7.

To reach this milestone, contractors must carry out overnight carriageway preparation and resurfacing works around the roundabout and on all four approaches.

What works have been taking place?

Major upgrade works, aimed at improving safety for drivers and all road users, have been underway at Lawnswood roundabout since August 2025.

By improving crossings, reducing vehicle speeds, and introducing cycle lanes, it is hoped the revamp will turn the roundabout into a place where everyone can travel easily and safely.

Why has the revamp been taking place?

The A660 corridor has a high volume of cyclists, pedestrians and bus users, but lacks adequate crossing facilities - a major barrier for walking and cycling, especially given the proximity to Lawnswood school.

Between 2020 and 2024, the junction suffers from a poor safety record with 25 recorded injuries at the roundabout, including six serious injuries.

What changes will the completed revamp include?

The plans include introducing these changes at Lawnswood roundabout and the surrounding area:

  • Making it a signalised roundabout.
  • Signalised pedestrian and cycle crossing facilities at the roundabout.
  • Segregated cycle facilities on the approaches to the roundabout.
  • New signalised pedestrian crossing of A660 Otley Road, just north of Weetwood Road.
  • A slight extension to the existing southbound bus lane on Otley Road.
  • Reduced speed limits from 70mph on A6120 Ring Road, between King Lane and Lawnswood roundabout, as follows:40 mph between Lawnswood roundabout and Leeds University sports facilities access.
  • 50 mph between Leeds University sports facilities access and Tongue Lane.40 mph east of Tongue Lane.
  • New waiting and loading restrictions within the vicinity of the roundabout.
