A large oil spill is affecting the A64 as it crosses the A1(M) at junction 44, the Bramham crossroads.

The closure was put in place on Thursday afternoon with resurfacing work ongoing, National Highways said.

All exit and entry slip roads on the roundabout remain closed and are expected to remain in place throughout today.

Route not expected to reopen till evening at earliest

Closures remain in place with further materials are required to complete the job and we're working hard with our suppliers to complete as soon as possible.

Responding to a query on social media National Highways Yorkshire said: "Resurfacing works are ongoing after an extensive spillage so it is unlikely any closures can be lifted by this morning.

"We'll provide a further update on completion times in due course once available."

Full National Highways statement

In a full statement provided yesterday, National Highways said:

"Junction 44 of the A1M (Bramham Interchange) remains closed due to a significant oil spillage all around the roundabout. All exit and entry slips from the roundabout are currently closed. The fast slips from the A1M northbound to the A64 eastbound, and the A64 westbound to the A1M southbound, remain open.

National Highways was alerted to the incident at around 11.50am today. Specialist clean-up services are due to arrive shortly and National Highways aims to have the roundabout cleared up and safely reopened as soon as possible.

In the meantime, drivers planning to travel in the area are advised to allow extra time for their journeys or avoid the area if at all possible.

The closure of the key crossroad which connects Leeds and York was put in place by National Highways at around lunchtime yesterday (Thursday, February 15).

The route has been closed since yesterday

A significant oil spillage closed the A1M J44 A64 Bramham Crossroads and all exit and entry slip roads on the roundabout on Thursday.
