Q&A: Newly-opened Leeds coffee shop offers relaxed setting - day or night

The Corner House Coffee Bar isn't your stereotypical coffee shop. The new venue, in Meanwood, caters for all types of customers, day and night. Ricky Charlesworth finds out why the shop has quickly become a popular attraction for those in the area.

HOW DID THE OPENING COME ABOUT?

I’d been in recruitment previously and had always lived in Moortown.

Me and my co-owner (Lyall Cardis) know what you want from a bar and what the punter wants.

WHAT MAKES THE SHOP UNIQUE?

Moortown is quite a diverse area.

But there wasn’t anywhere in the area to go that’s child-friendly and for somewhere for mothers to take their children.

For the older generations we also cater for them to go somewhere that serves decent coffee.

During the day we offer a kids’ menu with meals including toys.

We try to accommodate a different number of demographics.

We’ve managed to do that quite well with the feel of the place, the atmosphere, the food, the lighting and also the music in the evening.

WHAT HAS THE REACTION BEEN LIKE LOCALLY?

People we spoke to, when thinking of opening the shop, wanted a hybrid of somewhere you can go as a family, where you can have a latte, a coke or a beer.

Everyone can sit there in this same environment and enjoy the evening without feeling the pressure to have alcohol.

It’s just a very relaxed atmosphere.

We found there was a demand for this type of place in the area.

We’ve been open for about ten weeks and it’s gone from strength to strength.

On the evening we get a real bar feel and the feedback has been really positive.

The Corner House Coffee Shop, on Harrogate Road, Meanwood, is open from 8am daily.
