£1.2m needed for Temple Newsam golf revamp plans
Proposals to reduce the size of Temple Newsam Golf Club, replacing some of the space with nature trails, are set to be discussed by Leeds City Councillors next week.
Controversial plans to replace the entire 27-hole golf facility with cycling facilities surfaced last year, much to the dismay of Temple Newsam Golf Club’s users.
Since then, the council has put forward more modest plans which involve reducing the number of holes to 18 – plans which are set to go before a meeting of decision-makers next week.
The the council’s decision-making executive board will be asked to approve reducing the size of Temple Newsam golf course, as well as redeveloping the building currently used as a clubhouse to include a cafe and toilets.

Plans also include the development of a “road-safety park”, children’s play area, walking and cycling trails and landscape improvements.
Councillors will be asked to approve spending £1.2m into the scheme.
According to a report looking into the scheme, around 2,000 people were surveyed about the future of the plans – more than half agreed with plans to reduce the size of the golf course.
It added: “Following the comprehensive and wide-reaching public consultation, it can be concluded that a majority of respondents would like to see the size of the golf provision at Temple Newsam reduced and a range of new visitor facilities introduced in the area, to include cycling and walking trails, a road-safety park, a café, a play area, a new event space, and improvements to the landscape.
“Consequently, it is proposed that the golf course area at Temple Newsam is reduced from 27 holes to 18 holes.”
The meeting is set to take place on Thursday, September 24.
