Two Leeds lap dancing clubs apply to renew their licence

Two lap dancing clubs hope to continue operating on a city centre street after applying to renew their licences.

Liberte and Purple Door on York Place are required to have their permission to open reviewed every 12 months.

Leeds City Council will check whether adequate measures are in place to protect the safety of staff and customers.

The renewal applications will be decided by councillors at a licensing sub-committee hearing on Tuesday, December 2.

A report to the hearing said: “No observations have been received from West Yorkshire Police or any other party concerning this application.”

In 2010, a government review saw lap dancing clubs re-classified as “sexual entertainment venues”, giving councils more powers to regulate them,

A licensing report said: “The intention was to give local people greater say over the number and location of lap dancing clubs in their area.”

The council then carried out its own review of the venues and decided the maximum number allowed in the city centre would be four.

Lap dancing clubs were preventing from opening near properties with “sensitive” uses.

They included schools, play parks, women’s refuges and places of worship.

Both Purple Door and Liberte applied to continue opening until 4am, Sunday-Thursday and 5am at weekends.

Documents setting out the clubs’ safety measures have been submitted to the council.
