New all-weather pitch could transform grass-roots sport in Chapeltown

Youngsters will enjoy sports all year round if plans for an all-weather pitch get the green light in Leeds.

Football and rugby would be played on the floodlit 3G artificial grass pitch (AGP) if planning permission is granted.

A design report said it would help support grass-roots football and address an under-supply of sporting facilities in the area.

The report said: “It will also promote increased physical activity and improved mental well-being to support healthier lifestyles.

“Once implemented, the facilities will provide opportunities for more people to be more active, more often.”

The youth centre is among multiple organisations that use the site, part of the wider Scott Hall playing fields area.

The report said the new pitch would blend in with its surroundings next to the Leeds Caribbean Cricket Club, off Scott Hall Road.

It said: “It is sympathetic to its surroundings, avoiding any unacceptable impact on adjacent public areas or residential neighbours.”

The report said there was a shortage of 3G artificial pitches in the city, limiting opportunities for training during bad weather.

It said: “The proposed AGP will enhance football and rugby activities at Chapeltown Youth Development Centre, meeting local demand for artificial pitches.”

Leeds City Council is considering a full planning application which is out for consultation until February 17.
