Former restaurant could become new home for west Leeds church
New life for empty restaurant as church unveils community vision
Church services could be held in a former restaurant if plans can be agreed with the city council.
The Redeemed Christian Church of God has applied to convert the Rupyal Restaurant site on Town Street in Stanningley.
Regular services would be held there for the church’s 40-strong congregation if Leeds City Council grants planning permission.
Youth and community outreach activities would also be provided from the building.
A planning report said: “Whilst the primary purpose of the building will be as a place of worship, the church will also provide a range of wider community benefits which extend beyond religious activities.
“The Redeemed Christian Church of God House of Praise Leeds plays an important role in supporting community well-being, social inclusion and personal development.”
Two parking spaces at the site would be used by church leaders.
The report said the church operated a minibus service for the congregation and encouraged car sharing to services.
It said: “This service significantly reduces reliance on private vehicles and forms an important part of the church’s transportation strategy.
“The site occupies a central and sustainable location on Town Street where public transport services are readily available.”
The report said the appearance of the building would remain unchanged.
It said: “The proposal will therefore have no adverse impact upon the character or appearance of the area.”
A change-of-use planning application is out for consultation until July 8.
