Plans have been drawn up to convert the former Mexborough Arms pub in Methley into two houses.

Leeds City Council has been asked to grant planning permission for the redevelopment of the site on Watergate.

A design report said the building was no longer viable for re-use as a pub.

It said: “The proposal seeks to secure the long-term future of a prominent village building which has remained vacant and unused since a significant fire in 2015.

“The proposed conversion represents a sustainable and sympathetic form of development that will bring the property back into beneficial use.”

Hillfern Development Ltd applied for planning consent for the project following the pub’s long-term closure.

The report said: “The application site occupies a prominent corner position at the junction of Watergate and Park Lane in Methley.

“The site comprises the former public house building, associated outbuildings, former car parking areas and surrounding land.”

High-quality family homes would be provided if council planners grant permission, the report said.

It said: “The proposal represents the re-use of an existing redundant building that has been vacant for an extended period.

“The development will secure a viable long-term use and prevent further deterioration.”

Leeds City Council said a full planning application was out for consultation until August 12.

The report said: “The conversion will retain the building’s established appearance and historic presence within the village.

“The proposal will enhance the visual quality of the site through refurbishment and repair.”
