Peter Carlill stepped down last week

A by-election will be held next month following the resignation of a west Leeds Labour councillor.

Mr Carlill, who represented the ward since 2018, announced his resignation due to held grounds last week.

A Leeds City Council spokesperson said: “The by-election will take place on Thursday, October 22, with the count to take place that night at the Civic Hall.”

Mr Carlill was appointed as the council’s executive member for transport and planning in May this year.

Announcing his resignation, Mr Carlill said in a social media post his councillor role was “the best job I have ever had.”

But he said: “Yet it can also be a challenging job, jumping non-stop from one thing to the next, being available around the clock and being under continuous scrutiny – some positive, constructive and deserved, some otherwise.”

Mr Carlill was also thanked for his work as part of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s transport committee.

West Yorkshire mayor Tracy Brabin said: “I wish him all the best for the future and know he will continue to serve his part of the city well.”

The council has posted a formal notification of a vacancy in the Calverley and Farsley ward on its website.

Each Leeds City Council ward is represented by three councillors, each elected on a four-year term.

The next scheduled round of council elections will be held in May next year.
