Adventurous Yorkshire brothers launch app to put Leeds independents on the map

TripTro is now available to download on the App Store

Two adventurous brothers have created a free app designed to help people discover independent businesses in Leeds and beyond.

Corran and Chris Hull are the founders of TripTro, a map-based app that helps users save places they want to visit and reminds them when they are nearby.

The brothers, who hail from Yorkshire, attended a roundtable organised by the Yorkshire Evening Post at Stuzzi on Monday (October 26), bringing together local restaurateurs, business owners and other stakeholders to discuss the future of the city’s hospitality sector.

The app aims to encourage people to explore somewhere new while giving independent businesses a platform, rather than directing users towards familiar high street chains.

Users can pin locations they want to remember, from independent coffee shops and restaurants to other places they have discovered or want to explore.

Unlike traditional maps, TripTro sends users reminders when they are close to a saved location, helping them turn a place they have bookmarked into somewhere they actually visit with the aim of giving support to independent businesses.

Chris told the Yorkshire Evening Post: “One of the key parts of the app is that not only are we working with users, we’re also working with independent businesses.

“We don’t want any large chains appearing on searches, so we only champion local businesses.”

The brothers chose Leeds as the place to develop their campaign because of their Yorkshire roots and their familiarity with the city.

They hope TripTro will encourage people to step outside their usual routines and discover the independent businesses that give places their character.

Chris added: “We just want to add a little bit more adventure to people’s days.

“Rather than going to a chain coffee shop, you can search and look for somewhere you’ve never been before.”

The app is still a work in progress, but the brothers are now encouraging people to download it and begin exploring what it has to offer.

A newer feature, Discover, is designed for people planning trips or holidays, helping them find independent coffee shops, restaurants and other places to visit around the world.

Corran said they are keen to get more people using the app as it continues to develop.

TripTro is now available to download on the App Store.
