Plans to build 50 new homes on a former factory site could be backed with a council grant of up to £750,000.

Leeds City Council could allocate funds to support the scheme at Tower Works in Armley.

Yorkshire Housing has planning permission for the project, which would provide affordable homes at the site off Moorfield Road.

A council report said the 23 flats and 27 houses would help meet a growing need for new homes in the community.

The Leeds Housing Register showed the Armley ward as having the city’s 14th highest number of households classed as being in housing need.

The report said: “Delivering a new stock of high quality, affordable homes on this site will directly contribute towards addressing the city-wide need for new affordable housing, contributing towards meeting the identified need in Armley.

“It is situated within an existing residential community close to facilities and with good public transport links.”

Some 18 of the new homes would be classed as socially-rented and 32 would be affordable rents.

The council funding would come from contributions paid by private developers towards affordable housing when projects are given planning permission.

Yorkshire Housing had already secured separate loan and grant funding for the scheme, which will bring a vacant site back into use.

The report said: “The delivery of the scheme will bring this area of underused land within an existing residential area back into use to create a vibrant and thriving community where residents are close to existing services and facilities, providing a desirable place for people to live.”

Approval of the council funding was out for consultation with a decision due on June 5.
