Firefighters spend entire night tackling blaze at derelict school in Roundhay

Firefighters have spent the night tackling a blaze at a derelict school in North Leeds.

The fire broke out at around 6pm on Saturday, March 6 at the old Elmete Wood School, on Elmete Lane in Roundhay.

At its height, eight separate fire crews were at the scene, and police advised nearby residents to keep their windows closed due to the thick smoke.

At 8am this morning (March 7), West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service scaled down the incident, with three crews using three jets to continue to tackle the fire.

A statement on the service's website said: "This is a derelict school building fire, 20% involved.Firefighters tackling fire with large jets & aerial appliance from outside building.

"Crews from Killingbeck, Moortown, Leeds, Cookridge, Garforth, Hunslet, Mirfield, Featherstone & Skelmanthorpe stations in attendance. Police assisting with marshalling traffic."

West Yorkshire Police said: "Residents living in the area surrounding the derelict former Elmete Wood School, in Elmete Lane, Roundhay, are being advised to stay inside their homes with their doors and windows closed while emergency services deal with a fire at the site."

The fire could be seen from up to a mile and a half away. Twitter user @LeedsBirder tweeted the video above showing the flames in the distance.
