Leeds’ universities are undoubtedly an asset to the city’s economy (‘Pillars of our society’, August 7). But they are also a danger.

Next month, 65,000 students will arrive in Leeds. They will come from all over the country.

They will settle in crowded halls or shared houses, sharing kitchens and bathrooms and toilets. And they belong to an age group not best known for following safety guidelines.

This is a potent brew, like parking several cruise ships in the middle of Leeds. An outbreak of the virus is very likely. So, rather than boosting the economy, the universities might well bring about a local lockdown
