Free school meal figures show why action is needed - YEP Comment
The number of children in Leeds who are now registered as needing free school meals has risen by almost 5,000 in just one year.
New figures reveal the sheer scale of the challenge facing the Government and local authorities in the city, to ensure the most disadvantaged are given the help they need.
This newspaper has been clear time and time again on the issue of free school meals.
The additional strain piled onto local systems by Covid-19, lockdowns and resulting budget cuts have clearly had a hand in the increase.
And it is particularly sad to see at a time when so many families are mourning loved ones whose lives have been claimed by the virus.
Covid has brought inequality in Leeds into sharp focus and the Government must now do all it can to narrow the divide.
How many more families have to put their hand out before the broken system is fixed?
