Crucial businesses get support as they fight for survival - the YEP says

It is usually the busiest time of the year for our city’s high street.

As the weeks count down to Christmas, independent businesses had been gearing up to salvage what has been a terrible year.

Their owners have poured their blood, sweat and tears into ensuring their livelihoods are still in tact as they battle to keep their heads above water in the face of restrictions.

Some traders told the Yorkshire Evening Post their takings were just 10 per cent of what they had been this time last year.

So it is heartbreaking to see this latest bitter blow which will mean non-essential shops, bars, pubs and restaurants are forced to close their doors for a month on Thursday.

During the course of the year, we’ve seen businesses come up with innovative ways to ensure they can continue to survive.

Our city’s independent shopping scene is the jewel in its crown – and it needs proper financial support to ensure shops can open their doors again after restrictions are eased.
