Leeds writer Kay Mellor tells how life imitated art
Leeds writer Kay Mellor has revealed how researching her acclaimed series Fat Friends led her to become 'fixated' on losing weight.
The 66-year-old, who has turned the Leeds-based Fat Friends series into a musical, said she was told by a slimming group leader she needed to lose two stone, despite only going for research. Mellor told BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs host Kirsty Young: “But then, slowly, I became fixated, myself.” One of her Desert Island Discs was The Beautiful South’s Perfect 10 – the Fat Friends theme tune – because it gives her “butterflies”. She said: “It was such a lovely time of my life, it was a drama that was really important to me because I thought I had something to say about weight and body image.”
