Leeds scout group's funding plea

A scout group in north Leeds has appealed for people to get behind their bid for cash to refurbish their dilapidated hut.

Cookridge Village Scout Group are in the running for up to £25,000 through the Aviva Community Fund 2017 - but need votes to secure the cash.

Bosses say they desperately need funds to improve their scout hut, on Pinfold Lane, which is in “urgent need or repair”.

Anne Foggitt, of the club, said the ceiling and flooring are both breaking up and contain low-grade levels of asbestos.

She said: “We have tried for the past 10 years to raise sufficient funds for this costly project. However every year our funds are used up by other urgent things, eg, we have replaced our leaking roof and rotten fire doors, repaired our old boiler more than once, reduced the height of trees around the hut, installed much needed lighting to make it safer at night.

“Unfortunately the flooring and ceiling are now in a critical state but we still do not have sufficient funds to finance the project.”

The group - run by volunteers - say the building has the potential to offer more events in the community if it is given an overhaul.
