Leeds nostalgia: September 1984: Lost budgie flies into YPN canteen

Security staff at a Yorkshire Post Newspapers building flew into action after a stray budgie ended up in their canteen.

They dubbed the lost bird Betty, which took an immediate liking to security guard Kevin Gairn, then 26, pictured.

Mr Gairn said he had already established the bird did not belong to anyone in the building, adding: “I have taken her home while we try to find out who owns her. She’s a quiet budgie who stays in her cage. I think she’s quite friendly.”

An advert was placed in the YEP’s Lost and Found section from a family in East Ardsley which had lost a budgie, but when they were contacted their lost budgie was blue, while Betty was green.

Kevin revealed this week the budgie was later reunited with its owner.
