Groundbreaking £45m Leeds school scheme launched

The ground-breaking ceremony, at the site offices in Seacroft, marked the start of construction of three new, purpose-built schools for pupils that have additional needs.

The multi-site academy will be known as Springwell Leeds and is part of Wellspring Academy Trust, which has expertise in specialist education.

There will be three new builds which make up the four site establishment.

They include the former East Leeds Family Learning Centre, the former Merlyn Rees High School site and the Tinshill pupil referral unit which are all being redeveloped.

Current provision at Oakwood Lane for pupils with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties will also be part of the scheme.

Leeds City Council has pledged £45 million to transform specialist education across the city.

Coun Lisa Mulherin, executive member for children and families, said: “The creation of Springwell Leeds marks a progressive and exciting time for specialist learning provision within the city, and the £45m investment by demonstrates our continued commitment to ensuring all pupils are supported to succeed and reach their full potential.

“This new specialist provision will radically improve the learning, support and outcomes for some of the city’s most vulnerable children.”
