Dog named after former Leeds Rhinos star Barrie McDermott hoping to score a home

As celebrations continue after Leeds Rhinos’ famous treble victory on Saturday, the energetic canine - nicknamed Max-Dermott after former Rhinos star Barrie McDermott - is hoping for a win of his own.

Max has been in the care of the Dogs Trust in Leeds for five months and the charity is urging potential owners who could re-home him to come forward.

Amanda Sands, rehoming centre manager at Dogs Trust Leeds, said: “Max is a ball-mad boy who would love to win the heart of a new owner.

“He’s super energetic and will benefit from lots of extra training so is looking for an active owner who can keep up with his bouncy nature! Max is best suited to an adult-only home with someone who can be around during the day to help him settle in and keep him company.”

Potential owners will need to visit Max several times and build up a relationship with the boxer dog before taking him home.

Barrie McDermott lifted the Super League Championship and Challenge Cup trophies with Leeds Rhinos during his 10-year spell with the club which began in 1995.

Now 43, he also played for Wigan Warriors and represented Great Britain.
