Devastated family tell of heartbreak as Leeds pensioner left 'black and blue' after Morley crash

John Adams was walking on his own for a check up at the doctors on Corporation Street on the afternoon of Monday, October 3, when he was hit by a Vauxhall Corsa while waiting to cross the road.

While emergency services attended to him, a man approached Mr Adams’ wife and told her that he had witnessed the entire incident. The family are now appealing for him to get in touch.

Mr Adams, a dad-of-two from Churwell, was rushed to Leeds General Infirmary and spent two weeks receiving treatment. He suffered a large head wound, a fractured vertebrae and significant damage to his right shoulder, which is causing “excruciating pain”.

His daughter, Joanne Tate, said that he has now returned home and is bed-bound while he continues to recover.

Mrs Tate said: “Up until this my dad was a fit and active older person. He was very independent; an active fundraiser, a keen gardener and full of life.

"The injuries have left him in a very ill and painful condition. He’s become very depressed.

"He’s gone from being Peter Pan – defying the logic of old age – to a little old man.”

Mrs Tate said: “He was the only driver in the house and him and mum have always been so fit and independent. Their mantra is ‘if you don’t use it you will lose it’.

"Now he might never drive again or regain his independence.”

She said that the family may now have to get a stair lift installed at the home to assist Mr Adams.

Mrs Tate said that the family have been left “upset and frustrated” by the aftermath.

Mr Adams had visited Morrisons supermarket in Morley on the day of the incident and had left his wife at the store to go to the medical centre.

While lying in the middle of the road after the crash, he told emergency services that his wife would be waiting for him at Morrisons car park and asked them to find her. Police were able to locate Mrs Adams waiting in the vehicle and took her to the scene.

Mrs Tate said: “Mum went and was held back while the first responders were there.

"Dad was on the floor for between 30 and 50 minutes while the first responders cut off his clothes and stop the blood.

"During this point a gentleman crossed the road and said to my mum ‘I witnessed everything’. Mum was in shock obviously and didn’t think to say ‘can I have your name and number’ and that was where it was left.

"If this witness is out there still then we would urge them to please get in touch.

“We are just trying to get all of the facts because we have been left absolutely floored.”

West Yorkshire Police confirmed that the matter had now been concluded.
