Days Out: Thornton Hall Country Park

It may be forecast for sunshine but with the British weather you never quite know, so an attraction like Thornton Hall Country Park is a great destination as it offers family fun come rain or shine.

Open seven days a week, there’s plenty to enjoy at the park – why not let the kids loose in the Wizzick Play Barn, complete with ride-on tractors, a straw maze, giant sandpits and milk-a-cow feature.

At this time of year the farm is especially exciting as children can experience hands-on animal petting and lamb feedings as all the new additions are born.

There’s a Wizzick Farm Safari, a 4x4 adventure around 200 acres of land, junior quad biking and Quadtrex for those aged six and over and a caterpillar ride.

And for the grown-ups, there’s a tearoom where you can rest and refresh with afternoon tea after a whirlwind day exploring the farm.

In addition to their staple attractions, the farm also has a busy programme of events throughout the year which make every visit different.

On Sunday, April 22, the park will be taken over by Rex the dinosaur and newborn baby dinosaurs (accompanied of course by their safari rangers to keep them in line). Children can walk with the dinosaurs as well as enjoy live shows, dinosaur workshops, fossil hunting and face painting.

On Monday May 7, the Gruffalo will be visiting to make personal appearances through the day. And throughout the summer there will visits from all sorts of characters – from ponies to teddy bears to unicorns.

There’s even something to tempt dads on Father’s Day - the ‘Bolddog’ Freestyle Motocross Stunt Display Team (as seen on Britain’s Got Talent) will wow crowds with their amazing bike shows.
