Dürer's rhino re-imagined for sculpture

Yorkshire Sculpture Park's Nina Rogers comes face to face with a three dimensional rendition of Albrecht Dürer's 1515 woodcut Rhinoceros as it was carefully winched into place yesterday.

The fibreglass sculpture was created by Raqs Media Collective in 2011 and has been placed in the garden outside the park’s learning centre.

German painter, printmaker and theorist Dürer created his famous woodcut to mark the arrival of an Indian rhinoceros in Lisbon – an important event as the mammal had not been seen in Europe for over 1,000 years.

But remarkably he did so without ever having seen a rhino, taking information only from descriptions from others.

Raqs, a collection of New Dehli based artists and writers, re-imagined Dürer’s elaborate creature as a carousel animal.
