Liberal Democrat councillor Jonathan Bentley, for nearby Weetwood, said the issue was a 'nuisance' for residents and put drivers at risk.

Cllr Bently said: "An issue that is raising its head, certainly in my ward and across the city, is anti-social behaviour and people on quad bikes, motorbikes and off-road bikes.

"They are stolen or borrowed with no insurance and cause a specific nuisance in terms of noise and also people’s safety in the streets.

"I know there has been some work done on this, but the resources of the police are very stretched. When the off-road bike team does come out, they are very effective, but there are just too few of them."

A police spokesman told the YEP the behaviour was 'completely unacceptable', although there were no reports to West Yorkshire Police at the time of the incident.

The police spokesman said: "We did receive calls earlier in day about motorbikes being ridden dangerously and anti-socially in the area, which may be related, but no offences were witnessed by officers who attended.

"The district’s specialist off-road bike team and the local neighbourhood policing team have been made aware and will continue their work to target those involved in this type of behaviour, which is completely unacceptable and put people’s safety at risk.

"One of the challenges we face is in identifying those involved in such incidents, and we would ask the public to let us have any specific information about who in their communities is involved in the anti-social use of off-road bikes and any other relevant information, such as where they are keeping vehicles."

When anti-social and dangerous bikers are identified, the police seize bikes and can refer individuals to Leeds Anti Social Behaviour Team.

The police spokesman added: "We are also continuing to make full use of the special injunction which resulted from the large-scale ‘ride out’ incident in 2016 that led to thirteen people receiving prison sentences for causing a public nuisance.

"That injunction, which carries a power of arrest, bans anyone from taking part in anti-social driving of motor vehicles involving two or more vehicles in a public place anywhere in the Leeds district."
