A Wakefield man has been jailed after he forced his way into a woman’s home and sexually assaulted her.

Gary Simms was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court this week after he was found guilty of sexual assault following a trial in March.

Prosecutor Andrew Nixon detailed how after entering the property, the 57-year-old forced the woman against a wall and asked for a “snog.”

The woman rejected his advances and told him to leave but he continued to try and kiss her until she managed to push him away.

Simms, of Broadowler Lane, Ossett, then grabbed at the woman’s pyjama top and pulled it down, the court heard.

He repeatedly warned her not to tell anyone before leaving.

In a victim impact statement read to the court, Mr Nixon said the woman had been left “traumatised and scared” by the incident and had installed a ring doorbell so she could see who was at her door before answering.

Offering mitigation, defence counsel Holly Clegg described the attack as an “isolated incident.”

She said her client, who was diagnosed with PTSD following a difficult childhood, had previously suffered from suicidal thoughts and was a “caring and supportive” partner.

Judge Kate Rayfield rejected defence claims that this was an isolated incident and pointed to Simms’ one previous conviction of harassment.

“It’s another example of you pursuing contact against the wishes of your victim,” she said.

Judge Rayfield sentenced him to two years and six months in prison, and gave him a five-year restraining order.
