Two tonnes of rubbish removed from Harehills streets in massive clean-up

Leeds City Council has undertaken a major clean-up operation in Harehills.

The area has become a hotspot for the illegal dumping of waste in recent years, and items such as white goods and furniture are regularly left abandoned on streets and in bin yards beside houses.

This week the council's Clean Leeds team headed to the Comptons, where they cleared two tonnes of illegally deposited rubbish from public areas.

Enforcement officers also took part in the operation, and distributed leaflets about the correct disposal of waste and the penalties for flytipping to around 100 homes nearby.

In May, the enforcement team and police officers had to visit a property in the Bexleys area of Harehills after neighbours complained about a large amount of rubbish dumped in the garden.

The owner was told to remove sacks of waste and larger items including old sofas, electrical appliances and mattresses were removed by the council.

Clean Leeds regularly share photos of flytipped and dumped waste on their Twitter account. In some cases, residents have simply left unwanted household items such as beds, cots and chairs on the street or in alleyways near their homes, while in other instances, rogue waste collection companies abandon their customers' rubbish in rural areas rather than pay tipping charges at disposal sites.
