Dean Hudson punched the victim in the face and threw glass at her during the attack.

Charlotte Noddings, prosecuting, said the couple went to The Daisy pub, on Stanningley Road, with friends on April 15 this year.

During the course of the day they had an argument about the victim's former partner.

The argument continued when they returned to her home and Hudson became aggressive.

He began smashing up the house and damaged a PlayStation, a wardrobe and drawers.

The 29-year-old defendant then shut himself in the victim's bedroom.

He smashed a window over the door and threw glass at her from above.

Police were contacted and went to the property in the early hours of the morning.

Hudson refused to come out of the room and threatened to cut his arm on the glass.

He eventually came out two hours later.

He has previous convictions for violence, including assaulting a police officer.

Jane Cooper, mitigating, said Hudson had been on medication for anxiety at the time and has problems with alcohol.

She added: "He knows that alcohol and his medication do not mix."

Ms Cooper said Hudson had the support of his family and is hoping to attend an anger management course while in custody.

Hudson was jailed for nine months.

Recorder Tom Little QC said: "This offending is so serious that only a sentence of immediate custody is appropriate."
