Teen who knifed boy through the lung freed from detention, but banned from Leeds city centre

A teenager who knifed a boy in the chest, puncturing his lung, has been given a chance to prove himself after being freed from detention.

The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, carried out the attack with a pal after ambushing the victim in Leeds city centre.

The bloody assault was caught on CCTV, and resulted in 18-year-old Sana Saidilly being jailed for 19 months in October.

The 17-year-old defendant admitted Section 20 GBH without intent.

He appeared at Leeds Crown Court this week via a video link from YOI Wetherby, where he was being held.

It was heard that since being held in detention, he is accused of biting a prison officer during a struggle after allegedly refusing to return to his cell. He is due to appear at Leeds Youth Court later this month.

He also has a history of carrying knives.

Despite this, Judge Andrew Stubbs KC opted to give the youngster a chance, releasing him on a youth referral order with 12-months’ supervision for the Leeds stabbing.

He was also put on a three-month electronic tag curfew excluding him certain areas of Leeds city centre, and ordered to stay away from Saidilly.

He was also told to enrol on the Lives Matter course to educate him over knife crime.

Judge Stubbs told him: “It was a nasty piece of street violence. You accepted your part in it eventually.

“You realised what happens when you carry knives. You have a really unattractive record for carrying knives.

“If you carry on carrying knives, it might be that your luck runs out and you could be looking at a life sentence.”

The boy and Saidilly had been in a large group of young males and females that had gathered on Assembly Street, near the Corn Exchange, on March 28.

Saidilly, who was 17 at the time but is now 18, was seen to arrive by bicycle and talk with the victim, before slapping him to the face.

He then pulled out a knife, as did the 17-year-old, with both aiming jabs towards him.

The pair then left the scene in opposite directions. The victim was seen to collapse to the floor and was rushed to hospital by ambulance.

He suffered three stab wounds - one to his chest, one to his upper arm and one to the abdomen. His lung was punctured and caused it to collapse.

Both defendants were arrested and gave no-comment interviews to police.
