Student raped woman in Leeds hotel after imprisoning and beating her

A student raped a woman in a hotel after attacking her and refusing to let her leave.

Heyi Quan also tried to blackmail the woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, into giving him thousands of pounds.

The 24-year-old Chinese national was handed a lengthy jail sentence at Leeds Crown Court this week.

The court heard that weeks before, he had pulled a gun on a man in London after assaulting him and smashing a phone. It led to armed response officers being called. It was later found to be an air pistol.

But weeks later in September 2022 later he attacked the woman, putting his hand over her mouth and dragging her into a room and refusing to let her leave when she tried to bolt for the lift.

He then attacked her, kicking her in the stomach. Bizarrely, he convinced her to spend a night in the Hilton Hotel in Leeds.

She did not wish to go with him but was scared, the court heard.

He told her he expected sex, and pestered her. She eventually relented. When he fell asleep she went into the bathroom and called a friend who in turn contacted the police.

Quan was arrested from the hotel.

Quan, of East Road, Hoxton, Greater London, was convicted after trial of blackmail, but admitted charges of rape, ABH and false imprisonment.

For the London incident he admitted possession of an air weapon with intent to cause fear of violence, possession of an imitation firearm in public, assault and criminal damage.

Mitigating, Rukhshanda Hussain said Quan had travelled from China when he was 20 to study. She said he had been on remand for the past three years.

She said: “He has reflected on his behaviour. He is trying to better himself.”

Judge Christopher Batty said Quan admitted the rape offence at a late stage, with the victim twice having to be cross examined.

He jailed him for a total of 11 years and four months.

He was put on the sex offender register for life.
