Persistent beggar banned from Leeds city centre released despite jail sentence
A beggar who is banned from badgering people in Leeds has been released from prison, despite being handed a custodial sentence.
Jamie Cannibal was previously given a Criminal Behaviour order (CBO) in a bid to halt him scrounging money from members of the public.
The 37-year-old appeared at Leeds Crown Court this week where he admitted five separate breaches of the CBO from between March and May last year.
Judge Simon Batiste conceded that his limited sentencing powers meant any jail sentence he passed would lead to Cannibal’s immediate release, given that he has been held on remand for almost seven months.

He gave him a three-month sentence, ensuring his release.
Judge Batiste said: “I want you to avoid being back on the streets and back on drugs. I do not want to have to lock you up, I’m really keen for you to do what is necessary.
“Please take as much support as you can.”
Homeless Cannibal had been given the CBO in August 2023 because of his nuisance begging. He has 10 convictions for 46 offences to his name.
Little mitigation was offered by his barrister, Martin Morrow, during this week’s hearing, but he did describe him as being a “very intelligent man” but who needs help.
