Hopkins, 27, of Holmfield Close, Pontefract, pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm.

He has a previous conviction for assault..

Christopher Morton, mitigating, said Hopkins did not plan the attack and became involved after his girlfriend was verbally abused.

Mr Morton said Hopkins was hard working and was sorry for what he had done.

"There may have been some provocation.

"I accept that you would not have done anything to him had he not unjustifiably abused your girlfriend.

"But it did not warrant what you gave him.

"You punched him repeatedly to the face, breaking his nose and fracturing his eye socket.

"These are serious injuries."
