Ibrahim Albashir has been charged with attempted murder after a woman in her 30s was badly injured following the unprovoked assault on Otley Road, Headingley, on the evening of March 17.

Albashir, who is from Sudan, appeared at Leeds Crown Court today via video link from HMP Lincoln where he is being held on remand. With the help of an Arabic interpreter, he only spoke to confirm his name during the brief hearing.

He was not arraigned, with Judge Richard Mansell KC telling the court that the outcome of a psychiatric report was required to determine his fitness to plea. He said that 32-year-old Albashir will return to court on August 23 and may enter a plea then, providing the report has been prepared and its findings analysed.

A provisional trial date has been set for September 16, and would be expected to last three days. Meanwhile, Albashir, of no fixed address, will remain in custody.

The victim had been waiting at the bus stop near to the Original Oak pub and was approached by a male whom she did not know before being attacked with the broken bottle. She suffered cuts to her head and neck during the assault. Leeds CID launched an investigation and the area was cordoned off in the immediate aftermath.
