Jenkins, 32, of Bodmin Crescent, Middleton, pleaded guilty to three offences of sexual activity with a child.

Richard Walters, prosecuting, said Jenkins had been in a long-term relationship with Georgia's half-sister and they had two children together.

Jenkins began abusing Georgia after splitting up with her half-sister.

Mr Walters said: "Throughout these events, it is clear that Georgia had fallen in love with the defendant.

"She became upset when she saw him with other girls and cheating on her.

"He continued to see women of his own age and seldom went out in public with her and at parties would maintain his distance from her."

Jenkins told Georgia on her 15th birthday in August 2017 that he did not love her.

On other occasions he would tell her he wanted to end the relationship and claimed they were just having a "fling".

The prosecutor said: "When the defendant said he wanted to end the relationship, Georgia's response was that she would tell the police about the relationship.

"The defendant said he had no choice and would stay with her.

"The defendant had put himself in this position by having a relationship with her in the first place."

The teenager's family became aware of the secret relationship in January 2018.

Up until that point Georgia had only told some of her school friends.

Georgia text her half-sister and told her about the relationship during a disagreement with Jenkins.

Jenkins was told to end the relationship with Georgia but continued to meet her for sex.

In February 2018 he sent graphic sexual messages to her which were later recovered by police.

In the same month Georgia found out that Jenkins had a girlfriend his own age.

She told her mum, Sarah Nolan, that she had continued seeing Jenkins and police were contacted.

DNA evidence was recovered from Jenkins' flat which proved he had had sex with the teenager.

Jenkins was arrested and denied any wrongdoing.

He said he had known Georgia since she was seven or eight years old and that she had a "crush" on him.

When confronted with forensic evidence he claimed Georgia had forced him into having sex with her and threatened to say she had been raped by him.

Jenkins made contact with Georgia after he was bailed pending a police investigation.

An officer who spoke to Georgia later described how she appeared to have "the weight of the world" on her shoulders.

Georgia was found dead on August 4, 2018, a day before her 16th birthday.

Mr Walters said her family blame Jenkins for her death.

He said: "The Crown say he did not directly cause her death but exposed her to powerful emotions that she found hard to deal with."

Glenn Parsons, mitigating, said: "This is clearly an extremely sad and tragic case.

"The reason why offences like this are illegal and the reason the courts have to step in is to protect young people from their own feelings.

"There were strong emotions here on behalf of Georgia.

"None of that is to blame any of this on her.

"The adult here, from first to last, was Michael Jenkins."

Sentencing Jenkins, Judge Mushtaq Khokhar said: "She thought you were the centre of her universe and because of that everything in her life, it seems, revolved around you.

"There were times when she was distressed because you told her it wasn't love, it was a fling on your part.

"In my judgement, all that was said in full knowledge that you had full control over her and you could manipulate her.

"From your point of view, right from the start in my judgement, it was just sexual gratification and nothing more.

"While you I do not say you caused her death, you were a reason - a cause of her death."
