The 51-year-old, of Throstle Lane, Middleton will now stand trial on March 27, 2028.

The trial is estimated to last four days. Baker was then bailed.

Judge Tom Bayliss KC apologised to the defendant for the two-year delay in his trial, but said Baker was a “casualty” of the lengthy backlog of court cases waiting to be heard.

The fatal collision took place outside Pennington Court at 9.35am on August 2, 2024, when the VW Crafter van was being reversed into the road.

It struck 80-year-old Antony Johnson.

He was taken to hospital with serious injuries and later sadly died.
