Jealous thug smashed glass over partner's head at Leeds social club when she spoke to another man

He slammed her head into the bar before picking up glass

A jealous thug who glassed his long-term partner in a fit of rage while she was sat at the bar of a social club has been jailed.

The sudden outburst by 62-year-old John Pinner left the woman with a gash to the back of her head that required hospital treatment.

The decorator admitted a charge of GBH with intent. He appeared at Leeds Crown Court over a video link from HMP Leeds where he was being held on remand.

The court heard that Pinner and his partner had been living in a flat above Tinshill & Cookridge Social Club at the time.

On February 1 they had been bar area of the Woodnook Drive club and she noticed Pinner had been “off” with her and appeared “annoyed”.

Without warning he grabbed her by the hair and slammed her head into the bar. Pinner then picked up the glass and raised it before bringing it down on the top of her head.

Clearly in pain, she tried to escape but he lifted his hand like he was about to attack her again, prosecutor Samuel Ponniah said.

Pinner was arrested a short time later and said he had become angry because he saw her talking to another male hours earlier.

The woman required seven stitches to a “horseshoe-shaped” cut to her head.

Pinner has 13 previous convictions for 19 offences, including four for violence, although the last violent offence dated back to 1989.

Mitigating, Catherine Duffy said: “He has expressed his disgust at his own behaviour. He is very remorseful.

“He has not attempted minimise his actions. He was in the relationship for 25 years and it was the first time violence has been used.

“He is devastated at the impact it has had. It was totally out of character and will not be repeated.”

Ms Duffy said Pinner had lost his job as a decorator and had recently moved from Milton Keynes, saying that he had been drinking more and was concerned about his relationship with his partner.

Judge Simon Phillips KC jailed him for 28 months and gave him a restraining order of indefinite length to keep him away from the victim.
