Investigation into burglar who died shortly after release from Leeds prison

An investigation has been launched after a former inmate died following his release from prison.

Mark Wright had been serving time at HMP Wealstun before being paroled, but died in early September.

The Prisons & Probation Ombudsman (PPO) has now launched an investigation.

The watchdog is responsible for investigating post-prison deaths, specifically those that occur within 14 days of release.

No indication has been given as to when the PPO will complete its probe into the death of the 43-year-old.

It is the second investigation at the Wetherby Category C prison launched in recent weeks, after armed robber Stephen Dixon-Waterworth died in custody during the summer.

Wright was jailed in 2022 for burgling a church in Wakefield.

He stole £6,000 worth of equipment from the Zion Christian Centre in Stanley, including twin-deck CD recorder, a cassette recorder, a reverb unit, microphone, monitor and projector.

Wright, then of Ambiant Street, Wakefield, was caught after he left his blood at the scene.

He had also burgled a pensioner’s home with an accomplice.

Wright later told police he had been taking sleeping pills that day and could not remember because he was “off his head”.

He was jailed for 41 months.
