Wakefield bully with history of attacking women threatened to burn down girlfriend's family homes

He rang the woman 50 times in a night

A violent boyfriend ordered to stay away from his ex partner threatened to kill her and her family, chillingly telling her he would get her even if he was jailed.

Corey Stevens, who was previously jailed for beating an ex partner, was handed another custodial sentence at Leeds Crown Court this week.

Appearing over a video link from HMP Leeds, the 24-year-old admitted two charges of assault, strangulation and harassment by putting a person in fear of violence.

He and his latest partner had only been together for four months, prosecutor Kathryn Pitters told the court.

The woman later said it deteriorated quickly due to Stevens’ drug use and he became “incredibly controlling”.

On April 18 they were at her home in Pontefract when he attacked her, picking her up by her arms and throwing her to the floor.

Eight days later he became abusive, so she tried to ignore him which angered him further.

She then told him the relationship was over, and asked him to leave.

She went downstairs hours later and found he was still there, and he began to verbally abuse her again. He then grabbed her by the throat and squeezed.

He told her: “I’m going to get sent down for you, but if I don’t kill you I will kill myself.”

He then grabbed handfuls of pills and began to take them, but made himself vomit by putting his fingers down this throat.

Stevens, of Willow Park, Pontefract, was arrested on May 5, but later bailed and told not to contact the woman, and was even handed a domestic violence protection order.

He ignored it and began messaging her, sending her abuse from various social media accounts.

He told her he had made a deal with his friends that they would have her friends and family’s homes burnt down.

Late one night he called her from a withheld number and said he would burn her mother’s house down. She put the phone down, but he then called her 50 times threatening to “batter” her.

He warned her that she would not be safe even if he were jailed due to the apparent agreement with his friends.

He was re-arrested three days later and gave a no-comment interview.

Stevens has six previous convictions for 10 offences and was jailed in 2023 for 27 months for coercive control and ABH of a previous partner.

The court heard that he “delighted in making her distressed”.

Mitigating for his latest offences, Soheil Khan said Stevens was “candid” about receiving a prison sentence.

He said his actions were fuelled by drink and drugs and wished to apologise to the victim.

The judge, Recorder David Gordon, jailed him for 33 months, and handed him a 10-year restraining order to keep him away from the victim.
