Abuse calls spike during England game

West Yorkshire Police said it fielded 33 per cent more ‘999’ calls relating to domestic abuse than it had during the same period a week earlier.

The spike amounts to an extra 200 distress calls between the football game’s 8pm kick-off time on Saturday and 3am on Sunday morning.

A total of 3,606 calls including 999 and 101 calls were received in that time frame.

England opening match of the European Championships ended in a 1-1 draw with Russia after the Three Lions opponents snatched a last-gasp equaliser in Marseille.

Detective Superintendent Darren Minton, of the force’s safeguarding unit, said abusive behaviour will not be tolerated.

“The number of reported domestic abuse related incidents has shown that there has been a rise when England has been playing and I would like to reiterate our message that domestic abuse will not be tolerated and a moment’s madness towards a partner during the drama of the football can lead to a lifetime of consequences.

“I would urge victims to report these incidents – then we can make sure everybody gets the help they need.”

The force will host a webchat with local Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Burns-Williamson about domestic abuse on Wednesday at 7pm.

Mr Burns-Williamson added: “Domestic abuse and domestic violence are completely unacceptable, there’s no reason for a violent or abusive home, and it’s something no-one should have to live with at any time.”
