Be it grabbing a beverage before Leeds United play at home on match day, a post-theatre cuppa after taking in some arts and culture, or just getting together with friends after work, there’s plenty of local ‘boozers’ dotted in and around the city to choose from.
So the next question is - which one?
We’ve consulted some local knowledge in the city - you, the faithful Yorkshire Evening Post reader and Facebook commenter - to find out what you think are the best local pubs and bars that the rest of Leeds should check out, with a few names popping up on more than a regular occasion.
As much as we’d like to include “the street” and “the corner of my road” as inclusions, we also don’t really want a chat with West Yorkshire Police over open drinking in public areas, as much as your neck of the woods might be quaint.
But with that in mind, here’s where locals in the city consider “the” public houses and bars for a perfect pint in Leeds.
13. The Chemic Tavern
Located in Woodhouse, The Chemic is a cherished community pub that offers a quirky alternative to the city-centre bars. It is known for its eclectic events, ranging from barn dances and live auctions to folk music nights. Ian Harker declares it as "no contest" for the best local, while others appreciate it as a great community hub outside the immediate centre. 🍺 9 Johnston Street, Leeds LS6 2NG | Yorkshire Post Newspapers

14. Against The Grain
Based in Stanningley, this craft beer bar is a standout choice for those in the West Leeds suburbs. It is highly regarded by the local CAMRA branch for its dedication to quality ales and its welcoming, neighbourhood atmosphere. John Brooks specifically recommends this spot for real ale fans and notes it is well worth the short trip out of the city. 🍺107 Town Street, Stanningley, Pudsey LS28 6ES | Steve Riding Photo: Steve Riding

15. The Bankers Cat
A modern pub with a "modern twist," the Bankers Cat on Boar Lane was converted from a former NatWest bank in 2019. It features a grand mahogany bar and even uses the old bank vaults as a private party space. Nicki Myers and Laura Stephenson both highlight the Bankers Cat for its clean aesthetic and excellent selection of Thornbridge Brewery beers. 🍺 29 Boar Lane, Leeds LS1 5DA | Google Earth Photo: Google Earth
