Be it grabbing a beverage before Leeds United play at home on match day, a post-theatre cuppa after taking in some arts and culture, or just getting together with friends after work, there’s plenty of local ‘boozers’ dotted in and around the city to choose from.
So the next question is - which one?
We’ve consulted some local knowledge in the city - you, the faithful Yorkshire Evening Post reader and Facebook commenter - to find out what you think are the best local pubs and bars that the rest of Leeds should check out, with a few names popping up on more than a regular occasion.
As much as we’d like to include “the street” and “the corner of my road” as inclusions, we also don’t really want a chat with West Yorkshire Police over open drinking in public areas, as much as your neck of the woods might be quaint.
But with that in mind, here’s where locals in the city consider “the” public houses and bars for a perfect pint in Leeds.

7. Moot Hall Arms
This is the quintessential local for Leeds United fans, even opening early at 10am on home matchdays to accommodate the Elland Road faithful. It’s a dedicated sports pub with multiple HD screens and a pet-friendly policy. Sarah Martin lists it as "best by far," while others like Shane Murphy and Jo Foley highlight it as a top choice for a proper local feel. 🍺, 2 Mill Hill, Leeds LS1 5ER | Tony Johnson
8. The Ship Inn
Nestled just off Briggate in Queens Arcade, The Ship Inn is steeped in over 300 years of history and is known for its wood-panelled walls and brass accents. It is frequently praised for its homestyle food, particularly its fish finger sandwiches and proper doorstop ham sandwiches. Tommy Hinchcliffe and Lynda Dorsey both highlight it as a favourite hidden gem for a quiet afternoon. 🍺 71 Briggate, Leeds LS1 6LH | Google

9. Lamb & Flag
A 19th-century building restored with exposed brickwork and a superb courtyard garden, the Lamb & Flag is the go-to spot for the full range of Leeds Brewery beers. Its proximity to the bus station makes it a popular jumping-off point for a night in the city. Martin Seymour recommends it for its convenient location, alongside Gary Hendrickson, who ranks it high on his personal list. 🍺 1 Church Row, Leeds LS2 7HD 🍺 | Google Street View
10. The Scarbrough Hotel
Located right next to the train station on Bishopsgate Street, this Nicholson’s pub is a "unique character" pub revered for its eclectic range of real ales. It’s often the first or last stop for anyone travelling through the city by rail. Dazza P Jones and Sarah Martin both suggest it for its convenience and traditional character. 🍺 Bishopsgate Street, Leeds LS1 5DY | James Hardisty

11. Pack Horse
Another historic hideaway, the site of the Pack Horse has reportedly been a drinking house since the 1130s, though the current pub dates back to 1615. It is famous for its ancient origins and the Templar cross visible at its front. John Wilson and Lynda Dorsey both recommend the Pack Horse for its traditional, "old Leeds" feel away from the main thoroughfares. 🍺 Pack Horse Yard, Briggate, Leeds LS1 6AT | Google Street View

12. Stick or Twist
Conveniently located near the First Direct Arena, this Wetherspoons is a popular pre-show spot for those wanting a reliable, value-for-money meal or a quick pint before a concert. James Greenwood calls it "underrated," while Robert Killoran includes it as a staple for a consistent city-centre experience. 🍺 16-18 Merrion Way, Leeds LS2 8BT | Steve Riding
