I tried Jerk Junction in Leeds - and I couldn’t believe how much food I got for £8.99
The portions were huge
There is something immediately appealing about a place that lets you build your meal exactly how you want it - particularly when it turns out to be much bigger than you expected.
Jerk Junction, the Caribbean street food kitchen, is the latest permanent fixture at Trinity Kitchen inside Trinity Leeds, having already built a following in Manchester, Liverpool and Wilmslow.
The new joint opened in May, and is known for its vibrant atmosphere and traditional cooking methods - on a mission to bring "good food and good vybz" to the heart of Leeds city centre.
The concept is simple. You choose your size, base, main and sauce, allowing you to put together a meal to suit your taste and appetite.
I went for the ‘Likkle Tings’ size at £8.99, choosing rice and peas, jerk chicken and jerk gravy.
And it was huge.

For what is effectively the smallest portion, I was surprised by just how generous it was. I even added a dumpling for £1, although I really didn't need it by the time I'd worked my way through the rest of my plate.
The jerk chicken was spicy, rich and fruity, with a good depth of flavour. It had a smoky quality from being cooked in a jerk drum and worked particularly well with the rice and peas.
My dining partner went for the Regular at £11.99, which comes with a choice of two mains.
She chose curry chicken and fried chicken with spiced fries, and her portion was just as generous. She couldn't quite finish it.

The fried chicken was crispy, while the curry chicken came with a sauce that had a good kick to it.
We also ordered drinks, with me choosing ginger beer and my partner opting for a refreshing fruit punch.
Service is counter-based, but it was fast and efficient. We visited at lunchtime on a Wednesday and didn't have to wait at all for our food.

The Trinity Kitchen setting was buzzing and vibrant, making it an easy choice for a casual meal in the city centre.
But the biggest surprise was the value.
My £8.99 meal was more than enough to fill me up, while the £11.99 Regular was so generous my partner couldn't finish hers.
I also spotted mac and cheese among the base options, which looked particularly tempting and will be my choice next time.

Jerk Junction doesn't overcomplicate things. You choose what you want, get a generous plate of food and, importantly, get plenty of flavour for your money.
For a quick, filling and reasonably priced meal in the city centre, it is well worth a try.
