When Littlewoods unveiled a new-look Leeds store with 'fashionable and modern appeal'

Littlewoods reopened its Briggate store in October 1984 after a complete refurbishment costing £1.5 million.

The city centre shop was the 24th in the chain of 108 to undergo major revamping since February of the same year as part of a programme aimed at creating a "more fashionable and modern appeal" without detering the retailer's traditional shoppers.

At Briggate the store was completely re-equipped and replanned with the frontage altered to incorporate the image and co-ordinated colours adopted by the chain.

The group's associate director Graham Melville said much research had gone into the refurbishment programme to try to identify the customers the company wished to attract.

A lighter and brighter decor combined with new carpet walkway and hanging display stands replaced some of the counters.

The ground floor, previously allocated to both women and men's clothes, was being completely devoted to women with the range of garments expanded extensively.

Menswear upstairs has also been increased in range.
