The first of two rumble strips were being laid in a Leeds suburb after a campaign by residents.

The appearance of the strips in June 1985, which took some motorists by surprise, was part of an attempt to cut accidents in Foundry Lane, Seacroft.

The strips look like cobblestones and give a visual and physical reminder to keep to a slow speed.

"These rumble strips are an attempt to slow traffic down, " said West Yorkshire County Council's chief engineer Derek Wilson.
